- Green: a small twist on the obvious.
- Blue: trickier — think category, not surface meaning.
- Purple: the curveball; expect wordplay or a hidden pattern.
The Answers
| Group | Theme | Words |
|---|---|---|
| 🟡 Yellow | Trees | OAK, BIRCH, PINE, ELM |
| 🟢 Green | Verbs of longing | YEARN, CRAVE, ACHE, COVET |
| 🔵 Blue | Syrups / sweeteners | MAPLE, CORN, AGAVE, HONEY |
| 🟣 Purple | Old Norse / Viking | RUNE, FJORD, SAGA, THANE |
The purple trap: PINE could be a verb of longing and MAPLE a tree, but PINE is the tree and MAPLE is the syrup. The trees group needs the four clean ones (OAK, BIRCH, PINE, ELM).
How the August 3, 2026 board comes apart
Start with Trees (🟡 yellow). OAK, BIRCH, PINE and ELM share the most literal link on the board — each one is a plain, dictionary-level example of “Trees”. Bank the safest group first: clearing four tiles early leaves every later decoy fewer places to hide.
Green is Verbs of longing (🟢). YEARN and CRAVE usually surface first; the test is whether ACHE and COVET belong to “Verbs of longing” just as cleanly. If one of the four feels forced, that word probably serves another group and you are one tile off.
The blue group, Syrups / sweeteners, tends to need a second pass. MAPLE, CORN, AGAVE and HONEY only click once you stop reading each word at surface level and ask what single category could hold all four at once — here, that shared frame is “Syrups / sweeteners”.
Purple is Old Norse / Viking: RUNE, FJORD, SAGA and THANE. Do not hunt for it directly — the “Old Norse / Viking” link is built to stay invisible until the easier groups are gone. Solve around it and let the last four tiles confirm themselves.
Why the purple group misleads: PINE could be a verb of longing and MAPLE a tree, but PINE is the tree and MAPLE is the syrup. The trees group needs the four clean ones (OAK, BIRCH, PINE, ELM). Whenever a word seems to fit two groups, park it and finish the group that has four unambiguous members — the leftover placement resolves itself.
